One of the characteristics of established civilization is the creature comforts that established culture brings. Even in ancient times, the civilizations that became dominant were known for their own comforts and “conveniences.” One such example was the earliest use of indoor plumbing which existed during the Roman Empire!
In warfare the ultimate goal is to defeat your enemy. This can be accomplished through better training, better equipment, better tactics, and sometimes the unquantifiable nature of random chance, commonly known as the “fortunes of war”. Because victory is so important, a commander would want the very best training for his troops, and the very best weaponry available.
Defining the meaning and purpose of faith can be challenging. The Bible of course defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1, NASU). However, in a practical sense, explaining this in quantifiable terms can be difficult.
The term “man of the world” or “worldly” is used to describe someone experienced with the world at large. This type of person may be called refined or sophisticated, well connected to those of importance in the world. Such a person is sometimes admired for their experience or social stature. This type of a “worldly” man focuses upon the positive aspects of the world in which we live (at least at face value).
Throughout man’s long history there have been countless events or perspectives of thought which have sought out the answer to an ultimate question: What is the meaning of life? Such a pursuit of meaning is prolific among men of various cultures and languages because it is a unifying condition of man’s existence.
