Real 'Feel Good' Christianity

‘Feeling’ Good

The term “feel good Christianity” is commonly used to describe church groups or organizations which tend to focus upon aspects of Christian doctrine which feel “good.” By feeling “good” we mean the aspects of Christianity which are solely positive, such as: the love of God, the mercy of God, fellowship and togetherness in the body of Christ, etc. While these things are important and true blessings, a focus on these things alone leaves out many aspects of the “whole purpose of God” (Acts 20:27, NASU).

Making the Most of It

Empty Platitudes

In regard to life there are many platitudes that have become common sayings. For instance: “Life is what you make of it” or “Opportunity is just around the corner.” For the Christian, the choices and opportunities of life have a deeper meaning than of those in the world, with a focus not just on this life but also on the next. Walking in the worthy manner before God and sharing the Gospel of Christ are of the greatest purpose and importance.

Doing Nothing

A Famous Quote

A 18th Century political philosopher named Edmund Burke is attributed these words, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Although the specific quote is disputed by some, it seems in character with the overall attitude of Burke’s writings.

Doing the Most Good

A Giving Focus

During the holiday season, one of the focuses is upon giving. A part of this drive to give involves contributing to charitable organizations. The end of the year is a time full of major pushes and drives to collect foodstuffs and money for the less fortunate.

The Ends and the Means

Varied Scenarios

In considering ethics, one is presented with varied scenarios dealing with what is moral or correct. Differing theories concerning a proper ethic have been explored throughout human history, ranging from utilitarianism to nihilism to universal moralism. The discussions by philosophers and thinkers can be an interesting study, but in the end any ethic which denies the overall authority and power of God is faulty.
