What If You Could Know the Future?
9/Aug 2020
A Common Worry
The future is something that many people worry about, with good reason. There are many uncertainties in life. In the world, nations rise and fall, battles and conflicts emerge, and “stability” is never certain. In one’s own life different pressures rise to cause worry in life. Economic forces cause strain and uncertainty, tensions within one’s personal life and family can cause strain, even our own mortality can cause most to stress about our own future. So, what if you could know what your future held? The most common answer to this question would be to take advantage of what that information would provide.
An Earthly Focus
Taking advantage of knowledge
One could make quite a killing in the stock market if they knew the moment a stock would rise or fall. One could greatly increase their personal wealth and stay ahead of challenges in life if they knew when they were coming.
Security from the unknown
Someone could feel secure in knowing where their futures would eventually lead. Any problems could be foreseen and overcome before they became a problem. One could know the formula for future security for their life before they had to face it.
A Spiritual Focus
Of course, this answer has its roots in the temporal and physical existence of man. However, if we were to ask this same question concerning the spiritual and eternal existence of man, the answer would be different. The truth is we can know our spiritual future because God has told us already! In light of this knowledge, we can today take advantage of what this information can provide.
Choosing spiritual wealth
We can make choices today which will provide us with spiritual wealth for eternity. The greatest treasure we can possess is the security and blood of Christ (1 Cor. 10:16; Heb. 9:14; 1 Pet. 1:19; et al.). The choices we make in life can provide for us treasures in heaven (Luke 12:33; 18:22).
Security in eternity
We can be secure in knowing where our eternal future will be – in heaven with the Father. We do not have to know the events of tomorrow in detail in order to be assured that nothing “…will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:39, NASU).
What if we could know the future? The truth is, we can know the future that is the most important. Why would anyone choose to ignore it?
