Postmodernism: More of the Same

Ever Changing Culture
The popular culture of the world is an ever changing realm which sometimes catches us by surprise. In a grander way, the world of the current younger generations and the way that these people look at the world has changed from even one or two generations ago. There is a term used to describe this arising new outlook known as “Postmodernism”. To examine this outlook, we will look at different aspects of it. We will last consider the reality that Postmodernism is not actually as Unique as its proponents or adherents would think.
There Is Nothing New
A wise sage once explained an important truth, that there “is nothing new under the sun” (Eccl. 1:9, NASU). In truth, much of what has transpired before will transpire again, and much of what man calls “new” is simply old falsehoods and foolishness presented in a new package. Postmodernism is, in fact, no different.
While the attacks upon absolute truth may have become more pronounced, and the prohibition against so-called “intolerance” of thought become more mainstream, attacks upon the truth have existed from before the creation of man. There is, in fact, little difference between saying that no absolute truth exists in a philosophical sense and simply challenging God’s Word as either unnecessary or untrue.
Also, it is true that the lack of meaning found in a completely empty philosophy has more dire consequences for the lives of our culture, especially for our young people. However, to large degree, all Postmodernism’s rejection of all purpose and meaning accomplishes is to strip away the façade of shallow, baseless meaning which has been the creation of man when man chooses to run away from God.
The Ultimate Problem
The ultimate point is, while we need to be aware and be understanding of the “new” way of thinking as it influences our society at large and souls we come in contact with, this “new” philosophy can be defeated, just as every false philosophy of man has been in the past. The key is what we will use to confront this philosophy with. Just because the truth is no longer “fashionable” or causes discomfort among those who fear absolutes does not mean we should stop sharing it. In a way, Postmoderns are not hostile of the truth; they are thirsting for it so much they do not even know what it tastes like.
