Atheism's Fatal Flaw

A Universal Impact

The study of man’s origins is of paramount importance because it has impact over every single human being. The impact is shown in whether a Creator exists or not, and the necessary impact that such a Being would have on His Creation. Because of this, it is troubling just how commonplace it is for scientific textbooks, studies, and other resources to present an examination of man’s origins without a Creator as fact.

Such a presentation (whether overt or implied) is intellectually dishonest. It is incorrect to present something as fact which by definition must be a theory. The atheist may ask at this juncture, “Why should atheism be considered a theory?” It is simply because of the lack of empirical evidence in such a study.

Empirical Evidence

“Empirical evidence” is evidence which can be found without the realm of observation – typically within the realm of the five senses. While this is a slight oversimplification, this definition will work for our purposes in this article. All scientific discoveries and laws are based largely upon this practice of observation – something which is absolutely impossible within a study of man’s origins. Because of this any thesis concerning man’s origins is lacks definitive proof without external information or evidence. In light of this basic principle, we find that both theism (belief in God) and atheism (belief in no God) are just both theoretical – as far as neither can be observed empirically. However, one theory has the benefit of two important pieces of supporting evidence, while the other does not.

Existence as Proof

The universe itself (literally the effect of origins) stands as a great proof of its cause. The universe is wondrous in its making and grandeur. The universe stands as a great example of something equal or greater than it. Such evidence points toward a Creator. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psa. 19:1, NASU).

A Written Record

Second, man has not been left without a record of his origins. Even though man is left without empirical evidence of his own regarding origins, we have a record of what occurs from Someone who was there (Gen. 1:1ff). This record describes in detail how a Creator made the world in six days.

A Simple Conclusion

Considering these two pieces of supporting evidence (and much more), we can arrive at the more likely conclusion that theism is the better theory. Coupled with the revelation of our God we can be certain that theism is established fact.
